Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Andrew, I am a 22 y/o student at Concordia University pursuing Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Psychology and Philosophy. I recently concluded my third year of studies with a GPA of 3.69, scoring between B+ and A on all of my courses. My greatest strength as a student resides in my essay writing skills; last semester I received an A+ on a major paper, a grade that is rarely awarded within philosophy classes.
As someone who is considered to have a 'learning disability', I understand how difficult it can be to achieve high grades in an educational system that is not tailored to the learning needs of many students. Although we are taught to essentialize ourselves as smart or stupid, I recognize that students are often much more intelligent than they believe themselves to be. Grades are usually indicative of the strategies for success we employ, and our schools equip students with a very narrow range of strategies - if any. It is important to recognize that different strategies work for different students, and I am passionate about providing students with the tools they need to flourish as individuals. For me, there is no greater joy than watching students shatter their educational barriers!
Tutoring Experience:
I have been helping my peers succeed since high-school, but I have become much more active in tutoring fellow students in the last two years. During the school year, I host regular group sessions for free, where students engage with particularly challenging class material. I also work with students individually, teaching them: various study and research skills, note-taking methods, essay writing techniques, critical reading skills, and other strategies for success. If desired, I edit students' essays and provide extensive feedback, with the goal of diagnosing and strengthening students' specific weaknesses.
Tutoring Approach:
I am a patient and compassionate teacher with the goal of providing students with the skills they need to become academically self-sufficient. I do my best to cultivate a friendly and open learning environment, while maintaining a realistic perspective on students' progress and outcomes.
I work with students to tailor their learning experience to their individual needs, and am flexible in accommodating a wide-range of students' learning challenges.
