Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Amanda and I am a fourth year biochemistry student at the University of Ottawa. I am on track to graduate with honours in April 2020 and hope to continue my studies as a graduate student. I have always had a passion for learning and teaching others which is what drew me to become a tutor to support myself during my studies. When I am not studying or tutoring, I can be found volunteering a**Contact Detail Removed**vate yoga, working in a genetics lab on campus, or planning events as the biochemistry rep on my schools Science Students' Association!
Tutoring Experience:
I have been a private tutor for over two years, with previous experience tutoring high school science, math, chemistry and biology. I am also comfortable tutoring some university courses such as general chemistry, some cell-related biology courses, intro to biochemistry, protein structure and function, and genetics. I have also worked as a camp counselor for many years, being certified in "High Five: Principles of Healthy Childhood Development" and receiving extensive training on how to communicate effectively with children and resolve conflicts.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to come prepared to my tutoring sessions with a general idea of what is to be covered and some practice questions prepared and completed. I chose to let my student solve a problem first, and have them explain to me why they think what they did is correct. This opens the floor for me to either confirm that they know what they're doing (building their confidence) or explain to them what they should have done differently (providing a memorable learning experience). I also like to take some time at the end of my sessions to talk about test writing and see if they are having any issues focusing, if they are often missing things, etc. Test taking is a huge factor in student success and I feel it is just as important to address any problems a student may have while taking a test than it is to study the material itself.
