Personal Description:
Hi there, my name is Allegra and I am an adult student that will be attending the University of British Columbia in September 2021! I recently completed extensive mark upgrading through the TDSB and have a lot of experience with English and Social Sciences under the Ontario curriculum because of this. Especially given the current circumstances, I would love to help any students in need of extra guidance while schools are undergoing reopening procedures. The decreased sense of structure and access to teachers can prove challenging, so let's get organized, motivated and plan for success!
Since taking the time to explore and discover what career path I wanted to follow, I've put in the work to achieve my goals and believe anyone can too. In addition to receiving early acceptance to UBC, I was offered the merit-based Principal's Scholarship from Queen's University and President's Award from McMaster University for my GPA. As a result of these experiences I can also help students plan their academic or professional pathways, and offer advice for those preparing their post-secondary applications to Canadian universities through OUAC and UK universities through UCAS.
Tutoring Experience:
My teaching experience has been untraditional and ranged from camp counsellor to Judaic Studies and Hebrew assistant teacher throughout the last 5 years. I have also learned a lot from spearheading the Language Exchange Club at my last school, where I led guided peer editing workshops geared towards reading and writing skill improvement. The most valuable teaching skills I have learned have come from being a student in SSAT prep courses and multiple accelerated credits myself, as well as having opportunities to tutor children and fellow adult learners.
Tutoring Approach:
I love to prepare for my students! When my extracurricular club was active I created lesson plans for each weekly meeting to encourage language learning and practise for all members, and will do the very same for a tutoring session. I will tailor each session to meet student need whether that involves a one-time proofread or consistent practise research assignments. Furthermore, as individual learning styles vary so widely I truly believe that discussing learning goals from the start is essential. From there, workflow planning and check-ins are also key! I try to actively create the safest learning space possible, where mistakes, questions and discussion are welcome. It's when you understand how something works that you can learn.
