Information About Alex
Ottawa tutorPersonal Description:
Hi! I am a third year student at the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Science. I am majoring in behavioral neuroscience mixing my interests of science and psychology. I have previously taken the IB (International Baccalaureate) program in high school with my higher level classes being chemistry, biology and language and literature. I am happy to share my past experiences both in the IB and from UBC with my students. I am interested mainly in how we (as humans) work, at the cellular, biological and at the level of the brain. I am looking to inspire and encourage students to follow their interests and teach them all the amazing things that the sciences have to offer!
Tutoring Experience:
I have teaching experience as I have been teaching students in a Science and Engineering camp at Ridley College for the past two summers. Given the recent situation, the in person camp cannot run and I want to still teach students about science, but in an online format now. My class comprised of about 10-15 students where we explored difference science concepts.
In addition to my teaching experience I also have one on one tutoring experience as I have been tutoring a student of mine from his grade 7 to grade 11 in the sciences (mainly biology and chemistry) and he has now started the IB program as well.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is all focused about the goals of the student. Above all my goal is to inspire my students so they also have the drive to study on their own time. If I can get my students excited about both coming to tutoring sessions, as well as excited to leave so they can study on their own, I think my job is well done. Along with the personal growth of my students I want to share my passion and teach in a way that will allow the students to absorb and retain all the right information. This is done by first solidifying the knowledge, followed by production of the knowledge. If the student is able to produce/teach the knowledge in a way that someone with no knowledge on the topic will understand, they should be ready for the test scenario. I also incorporate test like questions into my tutoring sessions so I will first have a discussion with my students to get to know their class, teacher, exam style, teaching style and more.
