Information About Alaina
Montreal tutorPersonal Description:
I grew up in Pasadena, California. I have always been drawn to the arts and literature, and spent multiple summers working as a senior counselor at a summer day camp. From this job, sprung an opportunity to start networking with parents, leading to me tutoring and nannying for some years. I'm charismatic, patient, adaptable, organized, and a good communicator. I spent a good portion of the last year in Armenia doing volunteer work with children from the rural parts of the country.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been in two very different positions through my experience at the camp and with priva**Contact Detail Removed**ssons. The day camp consisted of organizing programs and classes for up to 25 campers at a time. This job was a bit lighter seeing as it was a summer camp, I taught "Creative Writing" and "Arts and Crafts" classes, and had a couple volunteers during each class to keep the campers engaged. The private sessions were one-to-one, sometimes two-to-one (while I tutored twin brothers who were in the same class). We covered all their homework.
Tutoring Approach:
All children are progressing at their own rate. It is important to stay patient, and always be rooting for their progress while they're in this developmental stage. I like to let the kids think of me as a mentor and a friend. It's necessary to set the boundaries from the beginning, so they know we're there to work, but I see nothing wrong with a bit of humor while we learn. I feel it lightens up the mood and keeps them engaged. Along with their homework, I would prepare some pdf handouts (with brain games/quizzes). For upcoming tests, we spend more time working on study guides and turn some index cards into a fun game, in hopes of creating a confident, prepared student, rather than a stressed out, self-critical one. It helps form healthy habits and qualities early on.
While working towards the progress of all my students has been the main goal while tutoring, communicating with the parents is just as important. They need to know the areas that are lacking so that they can help while I'm not there, as well as to see how far their kids come over the course of working with me.
