Personal Description:
I'm a kind and patient tutor with excellent English written and speaking skills, who studied the Melbourne University Master of Teaching (Secondary) course, focusing on Mathematics and elective English. I have completed 80% of this course including practicum placement. I achieved the Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) from the University of NSW in 2010.
Tuition Experience:
I have been a tutor ongoing for six years and completed a practical placement at a high school while studying at unimelb.
I previously consistently taught students in years 5 to 9 in Maths, English, Science and General Ability at an after school academy with small class sizes, while also privately teaching year 11 and 12 Mathematics (Methods equivalent). They achieved excellent marks. I'm currently teaching Level 8 Mathematics following the Victorian Syllabus.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach is to strongly encourage critical thinking skills as well as problem solving and evaluative skills, and enable opportunities to learn these abilities. I provide many practice exercises in foundational mathematics skills and literacy to reach these higher reasoning skills. A typical tutoring lesson from me includes an explanation of the topic, followed by relevant examples, exercises for the student to complete with supervision, reflection, statement of improvements to be made and a small selection of practice exercises to drill in for targeted homework.
The main problem that I see students encountering that they don't know what is expected from them. This damages confidence and makes them confused or uncertain, which can be a great hindrance to study. Outlining expectations and giving students concrete examples (and exercises for practice) is the first service that I offer students.
