Personal Description:
My name is Dr Alexander , you can call me Alex, and I am a dedicated, passionate and engaging social science lecturer and tutor with over 10 years of experience across a range of subjects at numerous universities and private colleges in Australia, China and the EU. My doctorate is in sociology.
Before that, I completed my Social Science BA/honours degree majoring in Urban and Regional Planning in 2013. I am primarily based at RMIT University's city campus where I tutor across the social sciences, management and communication departments.
Fun fact - after completing my undergraduate studies I taught English as a Second Language across Asia. As such, I am an ideal tutor for students from Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Thai, Korean, and other backgrounds who may not be confident with their writing or spoken English - yet! My students often comment that they feel more confident about their conversational English after a few tutoring sessions.
Tuition Experience:
In recent years I have lectured, tutored and written research across most subjects in the humanities and social sciences including English, history, political science, international relations, political theory, sociology, political economy, social theory, social movements, criminology, international law, global studies, global governance and so on.
Tutoring Approach:
Developed over 10 years of teaching, my approach to getting you the best results possible in your subject(s) involves the following:
- finding out what you're passionate about to tease out connections with the work you have to write
- adopting a relaxed, conversational approach to discussing and analysing the reading material together,
- talking it through until it makes sense to you (I'll ask frequent prompts to make sure you're clear)
- giving you a constant stream of written AND verbal feedback which can directly improve your writing
- at the end of each session, reviewing what we've achieved and providing further resources (books, websites, articles, videos and so on) to help deepen your understanding of the subject you're studying.
I have a study space immediately next to RMIT's city campus which my one-on-one tutoring students regularly use for our sessions. I offer 2, 3, and 4-hour sessions for students from VCE level (year 11 and 12) through to first-year undergraduates, those in the second, third or fourth year of their bachelor's degree, to students who are doing their master's degree, Tafe diplomas and everything in between.
You will find that you get so much more out of my one-on-one tutoring sessions compared to university tutorials with 20-30 other students in the room which the instructor has to divide their attention between. When you sit down face to face for a 2, 3 or 4-hour session, you will find that your level of engagement goes up many times over. Right away you actually have to have a real conversation with someone who is going to challenge you and offer practical tools that are going to help you feel more confident in your understanding of the subject.
My students provide glowing feedback (which you can read here on my profile page) and typically report an improved level of motivation with their self-directed learning habit formation, increased confidence that they know what they're talking and writing about, and higher grades in the subjects they have had me tutor them in once the feedback I provide has been engaged in their individual study between our sessions.
My availability varies based on teaching commitments at RMIT University at the city campus. Right now (semester 1, 2019) I am teaching 2 subjects, so about half of the week during the daytime is booked up with teaching hours. During semester breaks (June, July, November, December, January, February) I am more flexible and can accommodate early morning sessions through to late nights. Regardless of how busy I am, my regular private tutoring clients and I are usually able to work out a consistent weekly or twice-weekly time that works for both of our schedules.
My clients are an elite of university and high school students who wish to get the best results possible by any means necessary. I value my time highly and investing it in a new student is a commitment I take seriously. If you want to find out what you're capable of in your studies and see the best results you've ever achieved, contact me today to book a time for your first session.
